Which female characters in film and television inspire you?*

Image
Films and television shows really have a massive influence on our lives - although sadly, not always positive. With so many negative influences from some of the less sophisticated TV shows and films, such as Geordie Shore and 50 Shades of Grey, it's often hard to find strong, iconic female characters that stick with us long after we've finished watching. Watching iconic female characters being brought to life on HD Televisions, Panasonic ones in particular (given their high quality!), is a really special experience and one that I thoroughly enjoy. So, which female characters do I consider to be inspiring, iconic and just pretty damn incredible? For me, one of the strongest, most iconic female characters I have ever encountered on screen is Liz Gilbert in one of the most life changing films of all time, Eat, Pray, Love . (Warning - there are spoilers from here on in!) The film tells the story of journalist, Liz, packing up life as she knows it following an unexpected b...

Why the Men In My Life Have to Be Feminists

I feel like before I really delve into this blog post, I have to make one thing clear: Feminism is about the equality of the sexes. It's as simple as that. It's not about hating men, it's not about trying to be better than men, it's not about becoming superior. It's about women being treated in the same, decent way men are treated.  So with that thought in mind, why wouldn't  I want the men in my life to be feminists? Why wouldn't I want to have mutual respect for the men in my life? I want them to value me the way I value them - not see me as less than them, beneath them even. I want them to view me as the same  as them, on their level. Anything less is just simply not for me.  Not too long ago I was reading out a Twitter thread to my boyfriend. It was all about things women found to be a turn off in men, and one that I read out loud was "If he's not a feminist". I laughed, because obviously I agreed - I'm not attracted ...

The women who made me a feminist

Image
The women in my family are not what you would call 'feminists'. My youngest sister doesn't have much knowledge on the topic, although claims to be one, but I know she is not fully aware of what it means. My other sister thinks it's stupid and my mum also isn't someone you'd label feminist either. It might make you wonder where on earth my strong feminist streak developed from...well, today I'm going to tell you! These are the women who made me a feminist... Mrs Johnson.  My history teacher for the first year of my history GCSE, a heavily pregnant Mrs Johnson was a firm  feminist who would often rant quite excitedly about the topic. I had never really encountered feminism before this point, I'm not sure if I'd even heard of it before, which is really quite shocking. However, Mrs J soon changed this, introducing me to the Pankhurst sisters and the feminist movement. I knew there and then that I was a feminist.  Marina and the Diamond...

FORMATION

Image
"Formation" One word was all it took. One word in a simple, plain white font, plastered across an image of Beyonce with long braided locks, posted to her instagram after a 10 week absence and the world went wild . Within seconds, "Formation" was trending on social media, and once everyone had managed to access her website to watch the full video and hear the full song, both "Beyonce" and "Blue Ivy" were trending across social media too. So why all of the fuss? Well, first and foremost, Beyonce hasn't released a single, let alone an album in a very long time and this came totally unannounced and unexpected. Secondly, she dropped it just before her performance at the Super Bowl half time show, meaning that more people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl just to catch her performance (God, the gal knows how to do business). Thirdly- and most importantly- the song is totally iconic. Discussing important and often ignored black histor...

Feminism and me.

Image
Feminist. A word that over the last three years or so seems to have been flung around here, there and everywhere more often than ever before. From being a fashion statement to an attempted "insult", we have definitely been made more aware of feminism. However, the definition has been completely misconstrued, warped and twisted beyond recognition, with the term being surrounded by such negative connotations that many people are actually happy to deem themselves not  a feminist, and unwilling to support feminism! By definition, feminism is "the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes". According to the recorded clip in Beyonce's 'Flawless', a feminist is "the person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes". In other words, being a feminist, and feminism itself, is purely about equality between the sexes on all levels . It is not about women being better than men. It is ...
