Spilling the Tea With Francisca Rockey - Being a young black woman in Britain

Image
This week we’re spilling the tea with blogger Francisca Rockey. So far, we’ve chatted about the  blogosphere ,  taking a last minute gap year ,  how we can work to save the world  and dating . Today, in the final  post of the series, we’re talking about being a young black woman in Britain - and guys, the tea is piping hot.  As a young black woman, what are your thoughts on racism in Britain? Is it getting better, worse? Racism is prevalent in the UK. A lot of people will say “Britain is the least racist nation” but it really isn’t. If you genuinely think racism in Britain isn’t a thing then you’re either living under a rock or you are racist. Racism isn’t just shouting slurs at someone, its crossing the road when you see a black boy with their hood up walking towards you. We’re seeing a rise in black and mixed race celebrities, such as grime artists and social influencers, with the likes of Stormzy, Oloni, Grace Victory and Kelechi Okafor al...

All Lives Matter

Image
Black. White. Pink. Brown. We all have different coloured skin, depending on where we're from, our family history, who our relatives are, etc. etc. We all have different coloured eyes, different coloured hair, different sized feet, different weights. We're all the same thing, a human being with a brain and a heart, we're all the same on the inside. Just on the outside, we all look different.  So it's kind of ridiculous that we are still  judging people in the worst kind of ways for being different, for looking different? Particularly for having different coloured skin. I think you know what I'm getting at here. I'm getting at the current issue Black Lives Matter.  I've written about it before and I will continue to write about it so that people don't try to brush this under the carpet and forget about it. Racism towards black people- particularly towards black people in America- is alive and well and seems to be rewinding right back to the...

Recognising my privilege

Image
White privilege is a very real thing, and after yet another  uncalled shooting of a black male in America, today I have been thinking very hard about my privilege. There are no excuses as to why the police murdered Alton Sterling. Yes, he may have said he was armed but he STILL let the police pin him to the floor, he made no real fuss about it- and yet the police still shot him. In America, a white teenager raped an unconscious girl and received a 2 month prison sentence. In the same country, a black man was selling his music and he was shot dead. Let's also not forget black women, like Sandra Bland, who was pulled over for no  reason, taken to prison for no  reason and killed for no reason. Let's not forget that black lives matter .  Of course, white lives matter too. All  lives matter. But when do you hear about white people being shot by police for no reason? When do you hear about white people being racially abused on the streets by people who t...

Beyonce could...

Image
"Beyonce could throw Blue Ivy in the sea and the Beyhive would be like YASSSSS THROW THAT LIL BITCH" "Beyonce could kill Jay and have all these chicks killing their men too" "Beyonce could nuke a country and the world would be like YES B" Sigh. These statements themselves are far from funny- in fact, the failed attempt at humour is the funniest part of them. In case you aren't clued up on the situation, these statements come around as a series of meme's every time Beyonce does something amazing  totally out of the blue that gets the world talking- for example, when she dropped Lemonade.  Now people who share these kinds of memes and jokes are right in the fact that Beyonce has a huge amount of support no matter what she does, and she certainly does set her fans of into a mad frenzy, creating a world wide movement of mass hysteria every time. However, the people who share these meme's forget one teeny, tiny detail... ...

The People v. OJ Simpson

Image
Last night, the final episode of The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story aired. After a thrilling, tense and exciting series made up of ten episodes and an all star cast, I know I was not alone in feeling the disappointment that it was all over.  Now, obviously we know that OJ got off with a "not guilty", despite having a different result in civil court shortly after. I am totally undecided as to whether he did it or not, but I feel like for most of me thinks that he does. The statistics about his blood samples, the gloves, various other DNA samples and the fact that Robert Kardashian, his best friend, thought he did it just seem to sway it for me. But with all of the evidence that the prosecuting team kept putting forwards to the jury, why did OJ end up being "not guilty"? Of course there are a number of reasons; it was a case run by people's emotions, rather than by people taking in the cold hard facts. It was a case that turned into a medi...

Are the Oscars racist?

Image
Today I've got something playing on my mind... The Oscar's and the boycott from several famous black actors and actresses. My take? Ridiculous. Let me tell you why, before you all jump down my throats... The Oscar's is one  award's ceremony out of many that celebrates achievements from the film industry. Every year, numerous people are nominated for awards and have to sit in anticipation until the night when they find out if they successfully beat their opponents and win the coveted Oscar. This year, there is a lack of black individuals nominated, and apparently this was also the case last year...and so many black actors and actresses are boycotting the awards ceremony. There are several things wrong with this.  1) Maybe no black people are nominated because there aren't enough- or even any- black people to nominate in the first place! This isn't a problem with the Oscar's, this is a problem with the film industry as a whole! The film in...
