Anyone who knows me will know that I am incredibly career-orientated. I'm all about being a girlboss, I'm always trying to make more money, looking into new business ideas, learning how I can further myself and become better at what I'm already doing. I am definitely a go-getter  and that's not something that's going to change in 2018- in fact, it's only going to become more apparent.  I've got so many ideas whirling around my brain about things that I'd like to achieve over the next year in terms of my career. I'm not going to set myself any solid goals (for one of the first times in my life!) because I don't want to feel disappointed in myself if I don't achieve them. However, I am going to make a list of these plans (in a notebook as well as in this post!) and speak them into existence and just hope  and pray  that they spring to life! Anyone who knows me well enough will know that I am allllll about that girl power. I would consider myself to be a strong, independent woman and I constantly encourage the other women in my life to be, too. Being strong, being independent, being bold and fighting for your place in a world that is dominated by male privilege and misogyny can be very challenging, but it's a lot easier when there are some fantastic female role models to look up to. Here are some of my favourite women to look to for girl power, inspiration and motivation in every aspect of my life. I titled this piece "Sexism in Soaps" purely for the alliterative purposes. I only watch one soap and that's Hollyoaks, but my point is probably valid across all soaps.  So obviously sexism is everywhere, all the time. However, it was only the other day that I realised one massive, blatant act of sexism in Hollyoaks that really  wound me up. A female character, Leela, entered the show as a firefighter, which is a pretty cool career I thought. A single mum for a while, Leela was earning money to look after her two sisters (one of which turned out to be her daughter in the end...) and was basically the breadwinner for the family. This was a pretty cool #bossbabe and I approved.  And then Hollyoaks created this scenario; the fire station cut Leela's hours down and eventually got rid of her altogether. Last week, I saw this image online. It really irked me and I had to share it on Twitter to see what some of my pals thought of the image. Luckily, their thoughts were very similar to my own; that it was ridiculous.  This is the image I'm talking about. The one that states that "A career is great but you can't curl up with it when you're lonely at night".  There is several things about this post that piss me off. Firstly, its the implication that a relationship is more important than a career. And okay, while for some people it might be, for other people it's not. Who is anyone to dictate to someone what should be a priority to them? If chasing your dream career is your number one focus in life, great. If settling down with the love of your life is your number one focus, brilliant. If it's neither of those, good for you. I recently saw an article written by ELLE magazine about a new generation of women who are successfully holding down numerous careers. The phrase that's been coined for these women is "slashers". I am a slasher. Having left education with some idea of what I wanted to do and a vague way of getting there, I now hold down eight  jobs, some paid and some unpaid. Three provide me with my main source of income- the remaining five are more for the experience, contacts and getting my foot into the world of media based careers. It's hard work and often I'm working for 14 hours a day to get everything done and meet deadlines- all whilst maintaining a social life and studying a diploma too! I also know many other 'slashers', women who are starting their own business whilst working full time and doing a multitude of other activities such as being a mum, studying, blogging and the likes.
