The importance of putting yourself out there

Image
When it comes to life, it's so important to put yourself out there, no matter how much you might not want to. Putting yourself out there can be terrifying . It leaves you open and vulnerable to rejection, negativity, even (and I hate this word) 'haters'. It leaves you open to failure . And no one wants to face any of those things, let alone deal with them. But putting yourself out there doesn't always have to be a bad thing. Have you considered all of the things you could achieve by having a small amount of confidence in yourself and just going for it? (Whatever 'it' might be!) If you are at school and want to volunteer for a role as Head Girl or Class Rep or similar (you get my gist), no one will know you want to have that role, or that you are even capable of that role unless you put yourself out there, express your interest and show your teachers what you can do.  If you want to progress at work or try to get yourself a promotion, you...

#SeptemberStudies- BE HAPPY

Image
Today is the final day of September (for real?!) and so that means it's the last day in my recent blog series, #SeptemberStudies. I've written about a lot of different topics relating to school, work, uni and college over the last month. I've written about furthering your career while at school, how to balance a social life with your studies, the importance of using a diary, school bag essentials and a multitude of other things. I've tried to write about all alternatives for students, writing about GCSE's and A Levels, going to uni, going to college, going straight into work, doing internships and doing work experience placements too. I've tried to keep this series as open to as many people as possible. But all of that doesn't matter when it really comes down to it. It doesn't matter where you go after you've finished with school or what you choose to do as long as you are doing one thing: Being happy.  Because really, what's t...

#SeptemberStudies- Revision Tips!

Image
Exams are the bane of anybody's life, and revising for them can be not only difficult but dull and boring and irksome too. Now, I can't promise to make revision any more fun for you than it already is, but what I can  do is provide you with some tips to make it a little easier. Sound good? Cool, keep reading. Use flash cards These are great when trying to remember key terms, remember facts about certain people or trying to remember words from another language. Keep them short, sharp and to the point so that you're not trying to overload too much into your brain at once! Use post-it notes And then stick them everywhere. Next to your bed, on your mirror, inside of the fridge. Anywhere that you'll be able to see them, read whats on them and attempt to memorise them is a good place to stick them. Make notes three times Re write your notes three times. One time will be the brief copy, then rewrite them again in a bit more detail, fully understanding ...

#SeptemberStudies- Don't be a sheep

Image
There isn't much to say in this post today. It's not a helpful list, a set of guidelines, some useful information. Today's post consists of one piece of advice, from me to you.  Do not follow your friends. I mean it! Of course, in this case, I'm talking about university and college etc. And my advice to you is, do not follow your friends. Don't select GCSE's or A Levels because you want to do the same ones as your friends. Do not select a college or university course based on what your friends are picking. Finally, do not pick a college or university, or to even go to college or university at all, based on what your friends are choosing to do.  At 20 years old, I can safely say I have been 16, 17 and 18. I've been there, worn the t-shirt and I know  what it's like. I know you want to be glued to the hip with your BFF's. I know you don't want to be the only one from your group of friends in a particular class. I know the ide...

#SeptemberStudies- School bag essentials!

Image
In order for your school day to run smoothly, you need to make sure you have everything in your bag necessary for the day ahead! Here's a checklist of essentials that should be in your bag at all times! Diary. I don't care if you're a guy and think diaries are totally feminine things, diaries are the only way you're going to stay organised and you absolutely have to have one, even if it's only to write down the homework you have to do and when the next football match is. Water bottle. It's so, so important to stay hydrated. If you don't drink enough water, your brain won't function properly, which will cause you to begin to slack in lessons! Have a water bottle in your bag that you can fill up throughout the day if needs be. Tissues. Honestly, you never know when you're going to need a tissue. If you get a sudden nose bleed, need to clear up food you've spilled down yourself, something to spit your chewing gum into...tissues a...

#SeptemberStudies- Being bullied at school

Image
Bullying is a huge problem across the UK- across the world, in fact- and can affect anyone and everyone.  With the growth of social media, it has become so much easier  to bully people, acting as an online 'troll' where you can hide your identity whilst hurling abusive comments across the web. However, with this happening, it doesn't mean that physical bullying has ceased to exist. This is still as big an issue as ever. In fact, some could argue it's worse because there has been a cross over of physical bullying at school or work, which then continues outside of school and work online as cyber bullying. Some bullying incidents in person are even filmed or photographed and then shared online in some sick style of documentation.   Long story short, bullying is still a problem. But if you're being bullied at school, college or university, what can you do?  Tell someone Yep, you've probably heard it one thousand times before, because it...

#SeptemberStudies- I hate school!

Image
School, college or uni; some people love it and some people absolutely hate it. If you find you're in the latter and you absolutely hate it, then all I can say to that is tough luck. You have to be in education until you're 18 whether you like it or not. Luckily for you, there's some ways you can get through the seemingly long school days... Move to college when you're 16 Once you've finished your GCSE's, you don't have to stay at school in the same old routine. You can move to a college, where everything is far more relaxed. Everyone I know who made the move from school to college enjoyed it a lot more so this is definitely an option to be considered if you're fed up of school! Plan your future If you make plans for after  you've finished with school e.g. plan an apprenticeship or plan which uni you want to go to, this gives you something to a) want to work for and b) look forward to! This can make your school days feel more worthwh...

#SeptemberStudies- How to further your career while studying

Image
With the non-stop world we seem to live in today, it's never too early to get a head start on your career, even while you're still studying. No matter what your desired career is, there are several things you can do to help progress in the industry and bulk up your CV a little bit while still in education. Work experience Work experience is the most obvious of the things you can do, however it isn't easy to obtain in all professions. Most secondary schools do a compulsory two week work experience slot- if this is the case for you, really take advantage of this. Try to get experience with something that really will be beneficial to you. At the time, I wanted to be a photographer and I managed to get a two week slot with the photography department at RAF Halton which was an absolutely amazing experience.  You can also do work experience in school holidays and at weekends, volunteering your services to help even with the most menial tasks if it helps you to ...

#SeptemberStudies- Breakfast ideas!

Image
I am sure you will have heard this one thousand times before but breakfast is genuinely one of the most important meals of the day, with research suggesting that your breakfast should be around 400 to 500 calories. The food you eat first thing in the morning is so important as this is what fuels you throughout your entire day. More studies have shown those students who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom and in exams than those who don't. So stop making excuses as to why you can't have breakfast before school and have a read of some of these ideas that will help you to start your day right- they're all quick, easy and all very tasty! Scrambled egg.  Use two medium sized eggs for your scrambled egg and have it on either one or two buttered pieces of toast. You can change this breakfast dish up pretty easily by adding different things to your eggs, such as herbs, pancetta and different spices. Quick, easy and filling! Boiled eggs Boiled eggs take...
