#SeptemberStudies- How much time should you spend studying?

Yesterday I wrote about how to maintain a social life whilst studying; today I'm going to be talking about just how much time you should spend on your studies.

Ultimately, it's a personal decision and it varies from person to person depending on a number of factors. You need to take into consideration a few things:

  • What are you studying? Does one subject have more coursework than another? Does one subject require more revision for a more in depth exam? You and your friends might be studying different things and you won't all be able to study the same amount of time as each other. Some of you will need to do more and some of you not so much.
  • Are you up to date with your work? If you're a little bit behind because you've been ill or missed a lesson, you're going to need more time to catch up on work you've missed. This will require more study time.
  • Do you understand the content completely? If you don't understand what you're studying, its going to take more time than normal to re-go over it all and learn to fully understand it. There is no shame in not getting the first (or second, third, fourth) time around- all that matters is that you get there in the end!
  • When is your deadline? If your exam is a year away, you can be a little more lenient with hours spent studying. If your exam is next month, you'll need to spend a lot more time studying! Again though, it's all a personal choice.

Ideally, you should be spending at least one hour a night after school/college studying- whether or not that includes home work time or not is up to you. When it gets closer to exam time, you should spend 2-4 hours studying; this can be spread across a day, not just in the evening. Once you're on study leave before exams (which is usually the two weeks before an exam) you should try to treat your time at home like a school day with up to six hours of studying while having a break for "break time" and "lunch time".

What's important is that you don't miss meals or skip out on sleep in order to get enough study in. Try your best to eat three healthy meals a day and get 6-8 hours of sleep every night; not only is this healthy for you but it also keeps your brain functioning normally and this will help you when studying.

However, as I've mentioned numerous times it really is a personal decision. If you feel happy and satisfied working for 2 hours a day then great, if you want to work 6 hours a day, fab! It's totally up to you, its about how much feels right for you. If you're finding that you're exhausting yourself or draining yourself, work less. Adjust the amount of time you spend studying until you're happy with how much time you're doing it for!

How many hours a day do you spend studying? Let me know in the comments below!
